About

Stephen Hoover is a Ph.D. candidate in the Center for Complex Systems at Florida Atlantic University, where he works in the Eco-Networks Laboratory under the supervision of Drs. Ashkaan Fahimipour and Mark Bailey. His research focuses on mathematical and computational approaches to alignment problems in artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on causal reasoning, reinforcement learning, and interpretability techniques.

Stephen develops novel factorization methods for control systems and applies analytical frameworks to address alignment failures in learning algorithms. He currently serves as an AI Safety Coach for 80,000 Hours and previously has been an AI Safety Fellow at Florida Atlantic University's Center for the Future Mind. Prior to his current research, he was a member of the Machine Perception and Cognitive Robotics Laboratory and completed an internship at the Naval Postgraduate School's Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Stephen holds an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence and a B.S. in Mathematics from Florida Atlantic University, where he applies quantitative methods to challenges at the intersection of machine learning theory and practice.
